Antioxidants
Plant foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains contain many components that are beneficial to human health. Research supports that some of these foods, as part of an overall healthful diet, have the potential to delay the onset of many age-related diseases. These observations have led to continuing research aimed at identifying specific bioactive components in foods, such as antioxidants, which may be responsible for improving and maintaining health.
Antioxidants, in particular, are present in foods as vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and polyphenols, among others. Many antioxidants are often identified in food by their distinctive colors-the deep red of cherries and of tomatoes; the orange of carrots; the yellow of corn, mangos, and saffron; and the blue-purple of blueberries, blackberries, and grapes.

Antioxidants - FAQ
What are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are free radical scavengers, neutralizing them before they get a chance to do harm to your body. They get their name from their ability to inhibit oxidation.
What are Free Radicals?
Free Radicals are atoms or molecules in your body that collide with other molecules in an attempt to damage your DNA and cells.
Why are Antioxidants Beneficial?
Antioxidants inhibit oxidation in plant and animal cells and may prevent cholesterol from damaging arteries. Genistein and daidzein, soy isoflavones, are antioxidants, and researchers are investigating the possible role of soy isoflavones in reducing the oxidation of LDL, thus lowering its potential for causing heart disease.
There are lots of different substances we call antioxidants, including many vitamins and minerals. Some of the most well-known antioxidants include Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin C, Zinc, and Selenium. Genisoy Ultra Soy Protein Bars are high in antioxidants, Vitamin C and E. Try all four delicious varieties: Strawberry, Tropical, Chocolate Raspberry, and Chocolate Caramel.
How might antioxidants prevent cancer?
Simply, as electrically-charged free radicals bounce around looking for trouble, antioxidants work to neutralize the free radicals! There are many causes of free radicals including exposure to environmental factors like tobacco smoke, chemicals and radiation. The most common form of free radicals in humans is oxygen. These electrically charged oxygen molecules try to steal electrons from other molecules, causing damage to the DNA and other molecules. Over time the damage often results in diseases such as cancer. Complement your diet with radical-fighting antioxidants found in Genisoy Powders!
Which foods are rich in antioxidants?
Antioxidants are abundant in fruits and vegetables, as well as in other foods including nuts, soy, grains and some meats, poultry and fish. The list below describes some food sources of common antioxidants.
Sweet potatoes, carrots, cantaloupe, squash, apricots, pumpkin, mangos, some green leafy vegetables including collard greens, spinach, kale, tomatoes, watermelon, guava, papaya, apricots, pink grapefruit, blood oranges, and other foods. The antioxidant Vitamin A can be found in liver, carrots, milk, sweet potatoes, egg yolks and mozzarella cheese. Antioxidant Vitamin C, also called ascorbic acid, can be found in many vegetables and fruits and is also found in beef, cereals, poultry and fish. Vitamin E, also a powerful antioxidant, is found in almonds, in many oils including wheat germ, corn and soybean oils, and safflower. Vitamin E is also found in nuts, mangos, broccoli and other foods. You can find these powerful antioxidants in our delicious shakes as well!
What the experts say:
Soybeans are made up of 30 percent carbohydrate, 18 percent oil, 14 percent moisture and 38 percent protein. They are the only legume that contains the full nine essential amino acids in the correct proportion for human health. Soy protein therefore is categorized as a high-quality, complete protein. Its nutrition benefits include being good sources of phosphorus, potassium, B vitamins, zinc, iron and the antioxidant vitamin E. The Food and Drug Administration approved a health claim for foods that contain at least 6.25 grams of soy. The health claim states that, “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Nutrition experts also agree that soy-based foods are good for you because they contain less saturated fat than meat does and also provide dietary fiber, high quality protein, minerals, iron, essential fatty acids, and other important nutrients. Soy foods are a tasty way to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase your HDL (good) cholesterol.
