Welcome to the exciting world of soy, where there is a steady stream of great news about soy and what it can do to improve your health!  The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has concluded that soy protein consumption (25 grams per day) included in a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of coronary artery disease by lowering blood cholesterol levels.  In fact, the FDA has officially approved the use of the following health claim label on products that contain at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving and 3 grams or less of total fat:

“Twenty-five grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.”

This is exciting news for us as we work to battle this number one killer of Americans today.  When all the diseases of the heart and arteries are lumped together, (i.e., heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, etc.), they are called cardiovascular disease.  Although progress has been made in the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, it remains the number one killer of men and women in the United States.

In this month’s “Live Better Newsletter” we are going to reveal how simple it can be to become heart-healthy and prevent this killer disease from knocking at your door.  For starters, as part of our monthly special and to help you become heart-healthy we are going to give you some terrific products worth nearly $20.  You heard it right.  We believe that the faster one learns that heart-healthy products are important, the better their chances of avoiding diseases related to their heart.  So we want you to check out what you need to do to take advantage of this month’s special offer Here. If you think about it, statistically speaking your chances of having heart disease is almost fifty percent.  That’s right!  Almost one out of every two people in the United States is at risk for heart disease.  Together we can turn the tide.

Study Reveals Soy Nuts Lower Blood Pressure!

According to a study by researchers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, substituting soy nuts for other proteins in a healthy diet reduces blood pressure and cholesterol in postmenopausal women with high blood pressure. In this particular study, Francine K. Welty, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues assigned 60 healthy post-menopausal women to eat two diets for eight weeks each, one with protein, and the other with soy nuts.  The results are amazing!

The first diet, the “Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet” consisted of the following: 30 percent of calories from fat; 7 percent from saturated fat; 15 percent from protein; 55 percent from carbohydrate; 1200 milligrams of calcium per day; two meals of fish per week; and less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol per day.

The other diet consisted of the same foods as the first except that 25 grams of protein was replaced with one half cup of unsalted soy nuts.

At the beginning of this study, 48 women had normal blood pressure and 12 women had high blood pressure. At the end of the study the blood pressure of the women was measured in order to determine the effect of soy nuts on their blood pressure.

The result was that soy nuts significantly reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in all 12 hypertensive women and 40 in the 48 women with normal blood pressure.

The soy nut diet lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 9.9 percent and 6.8 percent on average in hypertensive women and 5.2 percent and 2.9 percent in women with the normal blood pressure.

"This study was performed in the free-living state; therefore, dietary soy may be a practical, safe and inexpensive modality to reduce blood pressure. If the findings are repeated in a larger group they may have important implications for reducing cardiovascular risk in postmenopausal women on a population basis," they conclude.

Frequently Asked “Heart-Healthy” Questions

Why are products that are Heart-Healthy important?

Heart-healthy products are important because statistically speaking your chances of having heart disease is almost fifty percent.  That’s right!  Almost one out of every two people in the United States is at risk for heart disease. Heart disease can manifest itself as a stroke or a heart attack and is the number one killer of both women and men in the USA.

How does heart disease occur?

Heart disease can have a variety of causes, but generally the high incidence of coronary artery disease is attributed to an unhealthy lifestyle.  The incidence of smoking, obesity, sedentary lifestyles, and an unhealthy diet high in fat all can have a significant impact on heart health. Since heart disease is not always obvious, it is important to get regular check-ups and have cholesterol levels checked on a periodic basis. This is especially important if you have a history of heart disease within your family.

How do I keep my heart healthy?

The most simple and primary ways to keep your heart healthy are:

  • Manage your diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and other heart-healthy soy products
  • Control your  blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Maintain a healthy weight
  • Minimize stress
  • Consume Omega-3 fatty acids and other powerful antioxidants
  • Don’t use tobacco products
  • Exercise
  • Get regular screenings

What does Heart-Healthy mean?

A heart-healthy designation means that the item meets specific nutritional criteria set by the FDA and is considered a beneficial food to incorporate in a balanced diet.   A soy product with a heart healthy designation means that the product meets the following FDA standards:

  • Contains at least 6.25 grams of soy protein per serving
  • Has low fat (less than 3 grams)
  • Has low saturated fat (less than 1 gram)
  • Has low cholesterol (less than 20 milligrams)
  • Has a sodium value of less than 480 milligrams for individual foods, less than 720 milligrams if considered a main dish, and less than 960 milligrams if considered a meal.

According to the FDA, products that meet these standards can be labeled to highlight the benefits of soy protein. Specifically, that diets low in saturated fat and cholesterol that include 25 grams of soy protein a day may reduce the risk of heart disease. Genisoy has a variety of heart-healthy foods including Soytato chips, Organic Bars, Smart Hearts (/products/snacks/), and Crispy Dippers just to name a few!  Click HERE to find out how to receive nearly $20 worth of Genisoy product absolutely free as part of our monthly special.

What do the experts say?

The Food and Drug Administration approved a health claim for foods that contain at least 6.25 grams of soy. The health claim states that, “25 grams of soy protein a day, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease.” Nutrition experts also agree that soy-based foods are good for you because they contain less saturated fat than meat does and also provide dietary fiber, high quality protein, minerals, iron, essential fatty acids, and other important nutrients.  Soy foods are a tasty way to lower your LDL (bad) cholesterol and increase your HDL (good) cholesterol.

Crisis of the Heart

According to the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease as an underlying cause of death accounted for 37.3 percent of all deaths, or one of every 2.7 deaths in the United States in 2003, according to the most recent data.

In 2006, an estimated 1.2 million Americans will have a new or recurrent coronary attack (this includes heart attack and angina).  Of these, about 500,000 will have a recurrent attack. And more than 70 million Americans live every day with some form of heart disease, which can include high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, stroke, angina (chest pain), heart attack and congenital heart defects.

Quite simply stated, heart disease is the most likely reason you will die.  Are you getting the point?

It is no secret that the continued high incidence of coronary artery disease is directly related to the lifestyle of Americans - the continued incidence of smoking, the growing incidence of obesity, alcohol consumption, stress, the sedentary lifestyles, and the diets high in fat.

Experts agree that prevention is the key, but while Americans are educated enough to know what to do, they are refusing to do it!  What needs to be done is to eat a healthy diet, keep their weight in check, exercise and don't smoke. But instead, obesity and diabetes rates continue to rise. Almost two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese, and the overweight epidemic is spreading to teenagers and children.

The good news is that there is hope for a healthier and better life!  It’s never too late to begin a program of diet and exercise that will significantly reduce your chances of getting heart disease.   Even better news is that soy protein can help!
